Stefano Pioli: Lazio Not prepared for Champions League

Coach Stefano Pioli conceded Lazio aren’t prepared to compete within the UEFA Champions League after watching his team lose their play-off tie against Bayer Leverkusen.

Lazio held single- lead heading in to the return leg but that’s just like it got as hosts Leverkusen recorded an extensive 3- victory at BayArena on Wednesday.

Goals from Hakan Calhanoglu and Admir Mehmedi put Leverkusen in-front within the tie after Mauricio saw red for that visitors halfway with the other half, Karim Bellarabi completed the scoring with two minutes remaining.

The defeat consigned Lazio towards the UEFA Europa League but Pioli didn’t have complaints publish-match.

“We [Lazio] lost simply because they performed in a different pace, so we made a lot of mistakes,” Pioli told Premium Sport.

“Bayer performed better and produced more, they deserved to win.

“Tonight is proof that we’re not prepared to compete on certain levels. We’ve a number of other items to consider, but tonight we had real football, and we’re looking to get for this level.

“In Europe, the kind of football differs. Last season we’d a rhythm and intensity. Tonight we must prefer Bayer because they have proven they’re superior, while our journey just begun.”
